Clear Labs at SXSW 2017: Why We Need a Data Standard for the Food Industry
by, Clear Labs
Clear Labs will be back at the 2017 SXSW Interactive this week in Austin, Texas. We are excited to once again be a part of the festivities, contributing to the ever-expanding array of food-and-technology focused panels and workshops at SXSW this year.
If you’re traveling to Austin and attending SXSW, please join us at our panel: “ Why We Need a Data Standard For The Food Industry”
- 12:30 – 1:30 PM // Saturday, March 11
- SALON 8 of the JW Marriott at 110 E 2nd St in downtown Austin
Our VP of Product, Maria Fernandez-Guajardo, and her fellow panelist, Jason Tatge, President/CEO/Founder at Farmobile, will be discussing how the food industry can coordinate efforts to cultivate, process, distribute, and sell food, and why a Data Standard is becoming increasingly crucial.
Drawing on their broad expertise, they will discuss the challenges the food industry faces in mobilizing its chain, traceability, the difficulty of replacing existing systems, and the reality that to stay competitive, manufacturers would not want to share their best suppliers.
The movement towards transparency in ingredients, suppliers, and processes in the supply chain is not without its challenges: transparency, for example, is rooted in the ability and willingness to share and receive information, bur many food industry manufacturers and retailers are not willing to discomfort consumers by disclosing data that is perhaps difficult to hear. At the same time, much of the food data generated today remains siloed and underutilized. One of the central questions Maria and Jason will probe into is how to encourage and enable transparency in this kind of environment.
Maria will discuss our advances at Clear Labs in genomics research, and how understanding our food at the molecular level plays an important role in not only improving and securing our supply chain, but improving how our food interacts with our human bodies.
A 2016 Silicon Valley Business Journal “40 under 40,” Maria is the Vice President of Product at Clear Labs Inc, where she brings together genetic scientists, food technologists, engineers and designers to deliver the first platform for molecular analysis and data science for the food industry. Maria started her career as a chip designer for Cadence Design Systems. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Zaragoza in Spain. Prior to Clear Labs, she was the Vice President of Product at RetailNext, the market leader in IoT retail data analytics.
Jason Tatge is a driving entrepreneurial force behind leading internet & Ag-Tech companies for over 15 years. WIth Farmobile, Jason became intensely focused on using IoT devices to passively collect data from farm equipment as farmers operate on their land. He created Farmobile to provide farmers with real time access and ownership to their land data.
